A new thermocouple for bath pyrometer incorporating an expendable tip, has been developed by Leeds and Northrup, Ltd, This report describes a three day trial of this instrument which was carried out by BASRA, A description of the instrument, together with cost details, is included. The report indicates that the thermocouple is suitable for determining blast furnace metal and slag temperatures, and illustrates the variations which occur in these temperatures with respect to time and length of runners. The simplicity of the dipping procedure is stressed and since no maintenance between dips is required, the operation can be carried out entirely by unskilled personnel. Under these conditions more than 90% of the total dips should be successful.
