INVESTIGATION INTO THE ORIGIN OF CRYSTALLINE ELECTRIC FIELD EFFECTS ON RARE EARTH IONS II. CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE RARE EARTH ORBITALS

Within the limitations of the ionic approximation, different contributions to the crystalline electric field parameters arising from the orbitals of the rare earth ions are calculated with particular reference to the Pr3+ ion in PrCl3. Contributions from the neighboring point charges of both rare earth and ligund ions as well as those from the induced moments of the legend ions have earlier been considered by llutchings and Ray (1963, henceforth referred to as paper I).
