FUNGUS RESISTANCE OF SILICONE RUBBER POTTED FIRING MODULES

Silicone rubber potted fire modules were found to be very susceptible to fungus growth. The first coating developed to inhibit fungus growth was also susceptible to fungi. Two fungicides, copper-8-quinolinolate and p-chloro-m-xylenol, were incorporated into the coating with and without added red pigment. The coatings containing 2 percent p-chloro-m-xylenol were in effective, whereas coatings containing 0.25 percent of solubilized copper-8-quinolinolate were effective in preventing fungus growth but showed same blooming of the fungicide on the coating. Polyurethane was evaluated as a material for possible future use in the design of firing modules. A concentration of 2 percent p-chloro-m-xylenol was ineffective in preventing .fungus growth on the polyurethane, while a concentration of 0.25 percent copper-8-quinolinolate prevented the development of fungus growth but evidenced some blooming of the fungicide.
