OBSERVATION OF THE ELEVATOR ILLUSION DURING SUBGRAVITY PRECEDED BY NEGATIVE ACCELERATIONS

By observing apparent displacements of a real target, and visual afterimages during weightlessness preceded by positive or negative acceleration, it was possible to identify these displacements as a special case of the "elevator illusion," as opposed to the oculogravic illusion. Positive and negative linear acceleration, as well as weight¬lessness, was obtained for this purpose in jet aircraft.
