In addition to the laboratory work, several inspections were made in the field to determine the extent to which faulty lubrication resulted in damaged surfaces on both body and truck center plates. All of these data will be discussed in this report.nWhile the need for lubricants is dictated by the obvious benefit of reducing wear on center plate surfaces, the beneficial effect is largely in another category. It has been observed that the binding of center plates has been conducive to im¬proper journal bearing performance and sometimes related to wheel flange wear.
