Electrical Protection of Tactical Communication Systems

The manual covers the subject of electrical protection with sufficient thoroughness to enable the communications engineer to evaluate the probable extent of a protection problem and to develop protection measures that are not only effective but also in economic balance with the benefits derived. The purpose of electrical protection and factors which need to be considered in establishing the protection requirements for communication systems are presented in Chapter 1. Also discussed are sources and effects of abnormal potentials, electric shock hazards and various basic methods for reducing the possibility of trouble from such sources. Chapter 2 presents in detail a variety of basic information required in the solution of electrical protection problems such as the nature and magnitude of lightning, surge propagation in communication plant, surge behavior of insulation, surge testing techniques, etc. Specific protection devices such as fuses, discharge gaps and semiconductor limiters are described in Chapter 3. Data on their operating characteristics are also presented. The final Chapter is devoted to the application of the principles and data on protective devices and methods presented in previous chapters. Several types of tactical systems are used as illustrative examples, included among which are a transistorized repeater, the spiral four system and a radio-multiplex system. (Author)
