The Effects of Competing Contingencies Upon Fixed Ratio Baselines in a Small Group Situation

Three female university students were placed into a group situation each being put on her own FR schedule. When each S showed a stable baseline performance, competing schedules of reinforcement were introduced for two of the Ss. It was found that individual baselines could be established and that competition at high FRs could not be maintained while competition at lower FRs could be maintained. The density of reinforcement seemed to be the important variable in producing this difference in rate of verbalization. (Author)
