A Rapid Ion Exchange Method for the Concentration of Cobalt from Seawater

A chelating ion-exchange method was devised for the quantitative extraction of cobalt from relatively large volumes of seawater. This method was needed for the study of seawater corrosion of cobalt-based, SNAP-fuel encapsulant alloys. The method consists in passing the acidified seawater sample through a column of Chelex-100 ion-exchange resin, then eluting the cobalt from the column with 4N hydrochloric acid. (Author)
