Surface chemistry studies on the interfaces of components of Class H totally enclosed DC motors indicate that siloxane vapors containing the Si-H moiety as an original contamination and as a result of thermal degradation of the vapor, interact with both the carbon brush and the copper commutator segments. Based on these interactions, a mechanism for excessive brush wear in siloxane vapor contaminated atmospheres in totally enclosed DC motors is postulated. Recommendations are made for further studies to minimize or eliminate this wear. (Author)
