Interference Reduction Techniques for Frequency Converters

The theory and basic design of typical radio frequency converter sections were investigated to determine their interference-producing and interference-susceptibility characteristics. A major part of the study consisted of the investigation of analytical techniques to be applied to frequency converters to arrive at recommendations for the reduction of such outputs. During the program, newer analytical approaches were applied to represent the frequency converter function, which, in turn, led to a better understanding of the frequency converter's characteristics, so improvements in performance could be made. A two-fold analytical approach was used: (1) representation of frequency converter functions by means of Fourier series and Chebyshev polynomials or by least-mean-square error polynomials, and (2) viewing the frequency converter as a time-varying network and applying a state variable representation and vector differential equation techniques to obtain a solution. In the first area of endeavor, use was made of Fourier series and Chebyshev polynomials as analytical tools. Further investigation took place to evaluate the application of polynomials having the least-mean-square error between the converter's transfer function and the representing polynomial. (Author)
