A finite element method is developed to approximately analyze unsteady compressible gas flow in one spatial dimension. Extension of this analysis to three dimensions is possible. The present method, as programmed for an IBM 360/65 computer, is suited for a variety of one-dimensional flow situations, except those characterized by extremely large rates of pressure change. The form of the equations is such that heat and mass sources, and sinks, frictional losses, cross-sectional area changes, and other quantities of engineering significance can readily be incorporated. The analysis can serve as a mathematical model to approximate some of the dynamic phenomena in gas flow. (Author)
