摘要

The stress distribution in cylindrical specimens tested in triaxial compression are analyzed using the finite element technique. The effect of various important parameters on the test results are determined and an estimate of the errors involved in assuming a uniform field of stress in the specimen while interpreting test results is given. These parameters include: the slenderness ratio of the specimen; the coefficient of friction and lubrication of the interface between the steel loading plates and the specimen; the thickness and stiffness of the steel plate; the manner in which the steel plates are loaded; the anisotropy of the specimen material; the nonlinearity and plastic flow of the specimen material. Finally, the effect of joints and cracking of rock is also analyzed. To accomplish this study, the two-dimensional, quasi-static finite element code NONLIN was developed to solve problems involving nonlinear, non-homogeneous and anisotropic materials.
