An Experimental Study of Chromaticity Limits for Console Signal Lights in a Luminous Environment,

The report presents the results of an initial effort to derive practical design and performance criteria for multicolor logic console signal lights such as now are used in many ships and weapons control systems. A group of 45subjects participated in a psychophysical experiment designed to explore the effects of the luminous environment on luminous color discriminations. The chromaticities and luminances of the colors projected on the rear of a back-projection translucent screen were held under control at fixed values by spectrophotometered glass filters and calibrated light sources and apertures in a specially designed projection-viewing console. The projection-viewing console constituted a partial simulation of a MK 84fire control supervisor's console of the 616class FBM submarine. (Modified author abstract)
