The Interpretation of an Abnormal Oral Glucose Tolerance Test Encountered During Multiphasic Laboratory Screening.

In a study of 162 male flyers who were given at least two consecutive standard 2-hour oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) at intervals of 6 months to 2 years we found that the incidence of chemical diabetes was depended entirely on the criteria used to define an abnormal test. The best reproducibility of any of the criteria tested was 50%. We conclude that the standard OGTT does not clearly define normal from chemical diabetics and should be considered only as a screening test for chemical diabetes mellitus. Our recommendations for follow-up studies in a patient with an initial abnormal OGTT are outlined. (Author)
