A Method for Determining Oil in Water.

A preliminary study has been made on a dye technique for determining the concentration of small amounts of oil in water. The mixing action of a blender results in the formation of a large number of oil droplets in water from one original oil drop. The subsequent addition of a suitable amount of oil-soluble dye to the system with additional blending action results in a homogeneous colored solution. Hence,low concentrations of oil in water can be visually determined. Under laboratory conditions,using tap water as the continuous phase,test 'oils'such as crudes,esters,paraffins and silicones gave positive results. However,protective colloid action in some cases masked the color test. The converse of the principle, i.e.,the determination of water-in-oil,is also possible using a water soluble dye.
