The Use of Context in Character Recognition.

The recognition of text by machine has been studied for many years. Machine reading of text has long been viewed as a means for eliminating many of the most tedious jobs in our society, such as: computer input of a hundred million tax forms each year; sorting of billions of pieces of mail per year; processing of credit card transaction slips; and sorting all of the checks which must go through a few banks and clearing houses and be charged to the proper account. Checks can be read with fewer than one error per million because all of the printing is done in a single font with magnetic ink by carefully controlled machines.
