Studies on Protein-Calorie Malnutrition in Egypt.

摘要

Protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) is the commonest form of nutritional deficiency found in infants and children in poor sectors of the Egyptian population. Developing simple criteria for the early diagnosis of the disease in Egypt could make a significant contribution to public health. This project has carried out an extensive laboratory survey of PCM, in coordination with relevant supporting clinical and field activities, including: (1) Studying the various clinical forms and variants of the syndrome; (2) Investigating the various biochemical derangements that might be associated with these clinical types; (3) Follow-up of the biochemical changes that might happen during recovery or progress of cases and utilization of the results in diagnosis, therapy and prognosis; (4) Finding out the high risk factors of the syndrome by studying the social background of patients; and (5) Whenever possible, studies on experimental animals.
