Organ Preservation and Tissue Banking.

The shortage of donor organs for liver transplantation both in Europe and in the US prompted a number of papers on liver preservation. The debate surrounding surface cooling versus continued hypothermic pulsatile perfusion was evident during the workshop. A new preservation machine that maintains stable perfusion pressures and a Ph of 7.8 was produced by Ozaki and coworkers. A preliminary report by Anderson et al. suggests that damaged kidneys, when placed in the same perfusion circuit as a good kidney, may adversely affect the pressure and flow characteristics of the well harvested kidney. No reimplantation of the affected kidney was performed in this pilot study. New aspects of human kidney preservation were presented by two centers, Cincinnati and the University of California, Los Angeles. The preservation of tissues other than kidneys or livers were discussed. (Author)
