Pyrolysis of Detoxified Agent Wastes. I. Spray-Dried GB Salts.

Laboratory-scale experimentation with four types of analytical pyrolytic equipment demonstrated the feasibility of pyrolysis for destruction of the phosphonate compound in spray-dried GB salts -sodium isopropyl methylphosphonate. Aerobic pyrolysis at 650deg C for 10minutes was sufficient for converting all phosphonate phosphorus present to inorganic forms. Anaerobic pyrolysis was also satisfactory at a temperature approximately 100deg C higher than aerobic pyrolysis. Major pyrolysis vapors in each atmosphere included prypylene,methane,and carbon dioxide. No GB (less than 0.0003%) was detected during pyrolysis. The pyrolysis residue,approximately 70% of the initial salt weight,was largely NaF, Na3PO4,and Na4P2O7. (Author)
