High-resolution absorption spectra of CO have been recorded in the postflame region of a flat-flame burner using a turnable ir diode laser. This letter describes the experimental arrangement and presents typical results for a fully resolved vibration-rotation absorption line at nu = 2077.0 /cm (nu = 1 to 2, P(10). We conclude from this feasibility study that tunable laser spectroscopy is a promising technique for obtaining fundamental spectroscopic data in combustion gases and also for measuring concentrations of ir-active species when line-of-sight techniques are suitable.
