Development of a Marine History of Analyzed Sea-Level Pressure Fields and Diagnosed Wind Fields

Using a highly-developed and flexible objective analysis technique, over 16.5 million synoptic observations made by ships at sea were blended with archived meteorological fields to produce re-analyzed sea-level pressure fields for the Northern Hemisphere on a 63x63 grid (polar stereograhic projection). These sea-level pressure fields, were used to diagnose sea-level wind fields for the same times. There are many potential uses for these high-quality fields of sea-level pressure and wind, the first application being to use the wind fields to drive the FNWC Spectral Wave Model--thus producing a 30-year 6-hourly set of wave fields. Other potential uses of the data bases established by the project are suggested in the Report. (Author)
