The development of laboratory shock and vibration has been on-going for a number of years with no firm knowledge as to the number of miles that ammunition and general equipment is transported as secured-cargo and as restrained or loose cargo. This investigation was developed to study and document the number of miles that cargo is transported as secured, restrained and/or loose cargo as a basis for future work in developing more realistic laboratory vibration and loosely stowed cargo test schedules. The contractor conducted extensive literature reviews, interviews with personnel, and visits to other installations. The findings show that ammunition and general equipment are transported a total of 4500 miles and that the restraint systems vary from securely fastened in three planes to loosely blocked in just two horizontal planes.
