Gas Chromatographic Method for Direct Measurement of Trace Levels of Volatile Aliphatic Amines in Aqueous Samples.

Volatile aliphatic amines in environmental samples are generally determined by gas chromatographic methods. Although these methods are the most sensitive, there significant interferences when trace levels are to be measured in complex aqueous samples. A gas chromatographic method using low oven temperature (30 C) and a packing consisting of 10% Carbowax 20M with 2% KOH an 80/100 Chromosorb W AW was developed to minimize these problems. The method has been used to measure these amine in bacterial broth cultures from direct, unfiltered injections of the medium with little or no interface by other compounds.
