Replication and Fault-Tolerance in the ISIS System

The ISIS project seeks to automate the transformation of fault-intolerant program specifications into fault-tolerant implementations. The ISIS system transforms abstract type specifications into fault-tolerant implementations, while insulating both programmers and users from the mechanisms used to achieve fault-tolerance. This paper discusses techniques for fault-tolerant implementation of a specification, methods for achieving improved performance using highly concurrent implementations, and constraints that these place on the ISIS architecture. The performance of an initial version of ISIS is then reviewed.
