Five commercially available carbon dioxide (CO2) absorbents were evaluated using the Drager LAR V Underwater Breathing Apparatus (UBA) in the unmanned mode by the Navy Experimental Diving Unit in accordance with NAVSEA Task Assignment 82-15. The purpose of the task was to provide performance data on CO2 absorbents which had been subjected to low temperatures prior to use to determine which absorbents could be safely utilized by military divers after storage in sub-freezing environments. CO2 absorbent canister duration tests were conducted using a hyperbaric breathing simulator at at depth of 25 feet of sea water (FSW) at a ventilation rate of 23 to 50 liters per minute and at water temperatures of 29 deg, 35 deg, and 40 F. The performances of the absorbents which were frozen prior to the test were compared to the performance of absorbents stored at room temperature, tested under the same conditions.
