General Purpose Multi-Bus Compatible Radar Interface Card (RIC)

This paper reports on research aimed at demonstrating a multarized (small), low-cost, low-power, low-power, multi-bus compatible, interface card capable of connecting a low-cost commercial navigation radar system to a small computer. A demonstration circuit was constructed on a 5.5 x 8.5 inch 6-layer printed curcuit board (PBC) with a standard multi-bus edge connector. Range, amplitude, and bearing data were memory mapped to provide a fast and flexible data path. Using only 6 watts of power, the card demonstrated resolution of 9 inches in free space (1.5ns in time), amplitude resolution of 6 bits, and bearing accuracy and resolution equal to the performance of the host radar's optical encoder.
