Archeological Research to Locate and Identify the French 'Fort on the Mississippi', 16 PL 27 (1700-1709), Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana

During the months of May, June, July, and August, 1986, extensive field and laboratory investigations were conducted to locate as precisely as possible Fort de la Boulaye, the historic French Fort on the Mississippi. Archival and historic map research focused on both primary and secondary sources in order to obtain a compilation of material that included information related to the Fort's location. Based on this research and on previous investigations, high and low probability areas were defined for a study corridor in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. That corridor included a portion of the town of Phoenix, as well as a ridge located in the marsh behind that town. The intersection of that ridge and Gravolet Canal already was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the location of the Fort.
