Validation of Psychomotor and Perceptual Predictors of Armor Officer M-1 Gunnery Performance

This research examined the validity of a computerized and paper-and-pencil psychomotor and perceptual test battery for predicting M-1 gunnery performance. Using the Unit Conduct of Fire Trainer (UCOFT) M-1 simulator, 95 second lieutenants in Armor Officer Basic courses were administered the battery at the beginning of training and were tested on gunnery skills near course completion. Stepwise regression of UCOFT Composite Score resulted in a multiple R = .76, with seven variables in the model. Using discriminant analysis with this subset of variables, 94% of the sample were correctly classified into the top 95% and bottom 5% of the Composite Score distribution; 80% were correctly assigned to the upper and lower thirds of the distribution. Although these findings require cross-validation, they provide useful information as the first step in developing an Armor Officer preaccession screen.
