Use of Primers in the Adhesive Bonding of Carbon-Fibre Reinforced Composites

The effect of priming carbon-fibre reinforced composite on adhesive-bonded joints has been studied by comparing joint strengths, bondline void contents and modes of failure for primed and unprimed composite. Six epoxy film adhesives were used with their recommended primers. In general, the use of a primer had very little effect on bonded joints. From the changes in mode of failure, it was possible that primers had improved adhesion between composite and adhesive. In one case, the use of primer resulted in increased bondline void contents, reduced strengths and plasticization of the adhesive. Great Britain. (JES)
