Integration of US Army Electronic Warfare Capabilities in J-SEAD (Joint Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) Operations

This paper examines the operational requirements necessary to integrate US Army electronic warfare (EW) assets with US Air Force capabilities in joint suppression of enemy air defenses (J-SEAD) operations. It begins with a review of the recent joint initiatives between the Army and Air Force concerning the execution of AirLand Battle (ALB) doctrine. Next, the paper discusses J-SEAD planning considerations, to include descriptions of Army jammer systems, analysis of threat air defense systems and joint staff relationships. Execution consideration are then highlighted, focusing upon four tenets of ALB--synchronization, agility, depth and initiative. The paper concludes with conclusions and guidelines for the joint staffer tasked with planning J-SEAD operations.
