摘要

The ability to use optical flow cues to detect foreground ridges during low-altitude flight was investigated. Ten video segments from actual low-altitude missions over three different terrains were digitized, and the pure motion information contained within them was isolated. The isolated motion cueing was insufficient in revealing the outline of the foreground ridge, regardless of terrain type. Subsequent simulations involving moving-dot images revealed that optical flow discontinuity detection is especially difficult for a sparse, irregular, color-contrast texture, which most resembles the terrain found in western deserts.
