Performance Measurement Methodology for Enhanced Submarine Combat

This presentation outlines the development of a methodology for objective man-in-the-loop performance measurement of combat system features based on experimentation in a simulated tactical environment. A history of submarine tactical performance measurement is discussed. First, a top-down functional analysis for experimental design was conducted yielding a descriptive decision model. Considerations involving experimental repeatability and the validity of results in a part-task, medium-fidelity environment are discussed as well as measures of performance. A data-specific approach to decision analysis is described which distinguishes this effort from other scenario building efforts. Implications of this approach for decision aiding and training efforts are discussed. In conjunction with analytical efforts, the development of a simulation facility incorporating rapid prototyping is presented. (fr)
