Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has become a major design tool for designersof turbomachinery. The progress in this area is fast, and the use of 3-D methods is becoming increasingly applicable to the design process. This Lecture Series will improve the knowledge in the NATO nations on how to utilize the modern tools of CFD to increase the efficiency, reduce the fuel consumption, and increase the affordability of aircraft engines. Its aim is a unique forum in which the designers from leading gas turbine manufacturers and CFD code developers will present their points of view on the role of CFD in design. The Lecture Series will cover the recent advances in the use of CFD for turbomachinery design. The role of CFD in the final design phase and the use of computational techniques in the preliminary design phases will be emphasized. Topics to be covered will include: (1) Computational methods for preliminary design and geometry definitions; (2) Methods for computing through-flows, blade-to-blade flows and geometry generation; (3) Optimization strategies; (4) Designing in three dimensions; (5) Code validation, mesh influence on solution accuracy; (6) Turbulence and transition modelling; (7) Comparison of time averaged flow solvers and 3-D unsteady CFD codes; and (8) Industrial use of CFD and the points of view of the designers. This Lecture Series, sponsored by the Propulsion and Energetics Panel of AGARD, has been implemented by the Consultant and Exchange Programme.
