Residual stress in electric arc welds is one of the greatest difficulties in the design and work of welding, but it has not jet been made fully clear, nor has an adequate method of determining the stress been established. In this report, the writers first examine sone representative methods of determination that have been tried and then describe a new method which they have devised by making some improvements on the old ones, referring at the same time to some rssults of the determination made of residual stress in the free and fixed types of butt welded joints.
