We have studied a series of ZnSe/Zn1-yCdySe double quantum wells (DQWs) separated by ultra-thin diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) layers. Large Zeeman shifts of interband transition energies were observed as the magnetic field was applied, and were compared with magnetic splittings calculated using the 8-band k p model, including the effect of strain. The Zeeman splitting observed in these DQW structures was found to be significantly enhanced compared to standard calculation. The enhancement of the Zeeman splitting is discussed in terms of effects of reduced dimensionality on the magnetic properties of thin DMS layers. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
