Volatile compounds from extracts of figs of Ficus carica.

Pollinator attraction in figs is due to the emission of volatile compounds by receptive inflorescences. Pentane extracts of receptive male figs, non-receptive male figs, receptive female figs and non-receptive female figs (collected from France) were analysed by GC-MS. Extracts from non-receptive figs were characterized by furanocoumarins (tentatively identified as angelicin and bergapten), sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (including trans-caryophyllene, and a compound tentatively identified as germacrene D), oxygenated sesquiterpenes (including hydroxycaryophyllene), benzyl alcohol and benzylaldehyde. Extracts from receptive figs of both sexes were characterized by benzyl alcohol, linalool and linalool oxides (furanoid), cinnamic aldehyde, cinnamic alcohol and indole. Extracts from female receptive figs also contained large amounts of pyranoid (linalool oxides), whereas those from male receptive figs contained eugenol and an unidentified sesquiterpene hydrocarbon. Differences between extracts from male and female figs are discussed.
