Changes in arginase activity within seedlings of winter triticale caused by S. avenae feeding were studied. Arginase activity in shoots increased in the susceptible cultivar Tornado but decreased in the less susceptible cultivar Witon after 24 h of grain aphid feeding. Further feeding reduced the activity of the enzyme within the shoots of both cultivars. Final induction was observed after 2 weeks of feeding. In the roots of Tornado, the enzyme activity decreased during the first week of the aphid feeding and slightly increased after 2 weeks. However, in the roots of Witon seedlings infested with S. avenae, arginase activity increased after 24 h and decreased after one week. The importance of arginase in the interaction between winter triticale and S. avenae is discussed.
