RAISING SCIENTIFIC LITERACY (OR BAMBOO UNDER MY FINGERNAILS)

There are some things that really tire me out: discussing scientific literacy is one of them. It's hard to find anyone connected with science who would deny the benefits of increasing the level of the public's scientific literacy. If only it could be raised, they argue, we would have an electorate much better able to deal with those political issues that require scientific knowledge, like global warming and stem cells; such an enlightened public would provide the employees for an increasingly technologically oriented workforce, and they might even begin to appreciate the importance of the scientific enterprise.
