At a recent conference held in the UK, which was attended by representatives from Howden Process Compressors, it was clearly stated that the Hy-drofluorocarbons (HFCs) such as R-134A are being especially targeted due to their high GWP. This will ultimately have a knock-on effect on South African mining and industry. South Africa is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol, which seeks to eliminate or limit the increase in global warming. Although South Africa, as a developing nation, has a grace period to implement any changes deemed necessary by the Kyoto Protocol it will ultimately have to follow the lead of the First World countries.
