We are all familiar with the concept of outsourcing contract labour in the fruit and vine industry. Contractors that supply labour teams for planting, pruning, harvesting, thinning, etc. have been active in the industry for years. This much-needed function saves the producer money in the long run in terms of direct labour costs as well as administration costs. The farm can get by with a minimum of permanent labour, only employing workers in key positions. The producer can also bring into the cost saving equation the amount of his own time spent on managing his labour and wages. It has always been a viable option for producers to make use of these services as part of his labour management strategy. There has in recent years however surfaced a new breed of "contractor" called the management consultant.
