Hernatological values of juvenile ostriches (Struthio camelus) raised in Nasugbu, Batangas

As the development of the ostrich industry continues in the Philippines, there arises a great risk of health problems in the flock. To arrive at a more reliable detection and assessment of diseases that may affect locally-raised ostriches, it is of importance that heraatological values be established. In the present study, the following hematological values of 12 juvenile ostriches raised in Nasugbu, Batangas were obtained: RBC = (mean +- SD) 1.93 +- 0.25 X 10~6/mu L; WBC = 11.05 +- 3.15 X 10~3/mu L; PCV = 36.41 +- 2.59 percent; hemoglobin = 10.92 +- 0.81 g/d L; MCV = 193.13 +- 28.76 fL; MCH = 57.72 +- 7.54 pg; MCHC = 29.99 +- 1.61 percent; heterophils = 7.81 +- 2.65 X 10~3 cells/mu L; eosinophil = 0.21 +- 0.20 X 10~3 cells/mu L; basophil = 0.22 +-0.69 X 10~3 cells/mu L; lymphocyte = 2.44 +- 0.69 X 10~3 cells/mu L and monocyte = 0.27 +- 0.17 X 10~3 cells/mu L.
