Foreword to the Special Nuclear Logging Issue

This special issue of Petrophysics on nuclear logging is the culmination of an effort started over three years ago to arrest the steady decline observed in the number of papers published or presented on the topic. A special session was proposed to the SPWLA Technology Committee for the 2004 Annual Symposium to address this decline. The proposal generated great interest from the nuclear community and resulted in two sessions instead of one. The support of Dale Fitz in putting the sessions together was a key to their success. I then proposed to Mike Lovell and then Barbara Anderson that the presented papers, appropriately reviewed, be published in a special issue of the journal. Both agreed enthusiastically. The authors responded with equal enthusiasm to the solicitation of updated papers for review and made subsequent revisions based on reviewer comments. We hope they bore with the iterations with equal fortitude. Of course, once again, I volunteered Dale, this time to help in reviewing the papers. With the industry humming like never before, it was a challenge for both of us do the reviews, in between numerous travels and putting out on-the-job fires. However, with able guidance from Barbara and support from Becky Morris, we managed to go though all eight papers submitted, beginning in January. Five papers are being published in this issue, and the remaining three are expected to be published in a future issue when reviewer comments are addressed.
