Washington lawmakers have agreed to end 40-year-old restrictions on exports of US crude oil - a move of historic significance, but one that may have little short-term impact in a world awash with oil (PIW Sep.28’15). Republicans in Congress had made repeal of the export ban a top priority in year-end negotiations over a massive tax and spending bill, but Democrats were also able to secure agreement on long-term financial support for renewable energy as part of a compromise package in which both sides had to make concessions.
