Tempers fray over Russian gas exports

Russia has reduced gas exports to Europe to cover a rise in domestic demand, the EU says. State-controlled Gazprom insists that it has raised supply to the equivalent of 180bn m3/yr and that it “continuously meets it obligations to its European customers”, although demand in Russia shot higher after temperatures fell to minus 25°C. Gazprom is using the full 16bn m3/yr capacity of its Blue Stream line linking Russia and Turkey, which shipped only 14bn m3 last year. The firm says deliveries through the Yamal-Europe pipeline to Poland and Germany rose by 20pc last week, but this was from a low base.
