The UN is threatening sanctions against Sudan and South Sudan if they do not “immediately” cease hostili- ties and formally commit to do so by 4 May. The UN threat of sanctions follows an African Union demand that the two sides return to talks within two weeks, and negotiate a deal on oil, borders and other outstanding issues within three months. But the role of UN Security Council member China is likely to be key, although Beijing is struggling to reconcile the two countries, which together made up China’s seventh-largest source of crude imports last year, supplying around 260,000 b/d.
