An 18-year-old teenager made a call to a university health center in Ohio where she was a student.4 She reported not feeling well, and she was allegedly advised to use an over-the-counter medication and get some rest. Her condition worsened, and she was then taken to a local hospital. She arrived at the hospital around 10:15 pm and was triaged within 15 minutes of arrival. A lumbar puncture was performed, which confirmed meningitis. The transfer to another hospital was arranged emergently. Helicopter transport was not possible because of the weather, and she was transported by ambulance. During the transport, the patient developed respiratory difficulties, but the ambulance was allegedly not equipped for endotracheal intubation. The patient arrived at the receiving hospital hypoxic and nonresponsive. Her trachea was immediately intubated. She did not regain consciousness, and the life support was discontinued 3 days later.
