Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) is caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), a Gram-positive encapsulated diplococcus, and remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children below the age of 5 years. It accounts for approx 11 % of all deaths in this age group throughout the world, with children in developing countries at particular risk The clinical presentations of IPD include bacteremia, bacteremic pneumonia, and meningitis, while the most common noninvasive manifestations are acute otitis media (AOM) and pneumonia.
