Pecan trees live forever or at least that's the way most of us think about the trees that make us a living. When I take city folks on tours of native pecan groves, their mouths gape open, marveling at the size of the trees. Then they inevitably ask, "How old are these trees?" Like many native groves, our trees are large and vary in age from 50 to 90 years old. I've worked with these trees for 25 years, thinning trees as they crowd, but never really noticing how large they've grown. Harvest seasons have come and gone and the only thing that seems to change is the size of the shaker needed to harvest the crop. Yes, my native grove will last forever... or maybe not.
