Georgian Mountain Peatlands and Wetlands

Temur Lursmanashvili, who introduced Georgia's peatlands already in Peatlands International 2-2002, reports now on the results of more intensive research during a recent summer expedition. In 2003, the IBIP (Information-coordination Bureau of International Projects. Monitoring of Natural Resources) began working on the project "Inventory and mapping of the peatlands / wetlands of Georgia". This project has been carried out with financial support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS)undertheGlobalPeatlandlni-tiative, managed by Wetlands International in cooperation with the IUCN-Netherlands Committee, Alterra, die International Mire Conservation Group and die International Peat Society. After searching and analysing the available archives and other information, it became clear that: In the report (1957-1959) of the "Giprotorfrazvedka" Institute, general information was given about West Georgia - Kolkhrti Valey; The Department of Biodiversity Protection and the Department of Defended Territories are curators of Kolkheti Valey, as Ramsar Convention territories from 30.04.1996. They succesfully realize the necessary works, and duplication of their work is not expedient.
