Some twenty years ago, when I was much younger with hair, the first electrochemical weld cleaning machine for stainless steel was introduced to the market under the banner: "This is the death of pickling pastes!". At that time I had a letter published in defence of pickling pastes because I had an axe to grind, which I don't have now as my company has been selling weld cleaning machines for the past ten years. What goes around comes around. A leaflet publicising yet another new weld cleaning machine incorporates the assertion: "Say goodbye to pickling paste forever....". Such assertions suggest a profound lack of knowledge of our industry. Not every fabricator in stainless steel will wish to invest several hundred pounds in a weld cleaning machine when he can buy a tub of pickling paste for a few quid.
